Bodine students raised $6,247.26 for St. Jude through the Math-a-Thon this spring! Top fundraisers, along with the students who brought in the most can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, went on a field trip to the Danny Thomas Museum @ St. Jude, the Ronald McDonald House, and finally to the Arcade for lunch.

Middle School's Depression Thursday

On Thursday, April 28, Middle School students particpated in "Depression Thursday" to experience a little of what it might have been like to live during the Great Depression. In addition to waiting in line for breakfast and lunch in the Bodine Soup kitchen, students listend to music and radio programing from the 1930's, made children's toys by recycling old clothing, and built a model shanty town from scraps of wood, cloth and cardboard. Though a good time was had by all, the day certainly provided a new perspective on the sacrifices made by Americans who experienced the Depression.

2nd Grade Field Trip

Ms. Shaw’s class recently went on a field trip to tour the new LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. They got a chance to look at all of the beautiful artwork on the main level and even got to see Bunny Lane where the patients get to pick out a toy to make them brave and more comfortable before they go into surgery.

On Tuesday, April 12th, the Middle School boys were treated to an ice cream and video party in the Library. Mrs. Bryant, parent sponsor, kindly provided the party. The boys earned this treat by being the class group responsible for collecting the greatest number of box tops and turning them in to our Box Tops for Education program for the session ending in February. The Bodine School received a check for over $200 for all we collected this time, so many thanks for everyone's participation. This is "free money" for our Library, and it really does make a difference!

Special Projects

Coach Koji, Bodine's P.E. teacher, recently started a very special project. He is making origami cranes to send to 5th grader Erika Y., who is being treated at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh for a brain tumor. Students and teachers are each choosing a crane to write a personal message on in order to send their well wishes to Erika.

In Japan, the crane is the symbol for long life, prosperity, and good health. It is a Japanese tradition to fold a thousand cranes for someone who is sick to represent a form of healing and hope during challenging times.

Also to show his support for Erika, Coach Koji had his hair buzzed along with the fifth grade boys during the St. Jude Math-a-Thon kick-off assembly earlier in the week. The Math-a-Thon is dedicated to Erika since she will continue her treatment at St. Jude once she returns to Memphis.

Coach Koji, who is from Osaka, Japan, still has family there. In honor of their Coach, the Student Council voted to have a Red Cross drive after last month's earthquake and tsunami in Japan and raised $978 to give to the relief efforts.

Congratulations to 4^th grader Will B., who won 3^rd place in the 4-H poster contest at the county level! 4-H is a positive youth development organization that empowers young people to reach their full potential. A vast community of more than 6 million youth and adults working together for positive change, 4-H enables America’s youth to emerge as leaders through hands-on learning, research-based 4-H youth programs and adult mentorship, in order to give back to their local communities. Will’s poster is on display at Bodine in the multi-purpose room.

Fourth Grade Field Trip to Humane Society and Bonefish Grill

The 4th grade students recently enjoyed a field trip to the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County. They learned about animal welfare and were treated to a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the building. They even had the opportunity to interact with many of the cats and dogs, which was an enriching experience for both the animals and the students.

The field trip culminated at Bonefish Grill in Cordova, where the students expanded their palettes by enjoying some amazing cuisine including, but not limited to, calamari, edamame, sashimi tuna, and dumplings. The students also learned some useful pointers about table manners and dining etiquette. As a token of appreciation to our generous hosts at Bonefish, the students presented them with a Bodine “goody” basket and a hand painted canvas they plan to hang proudly in their restaurant.

Third grade science experiments are tasty but messy! One time, students combined fizzy powder with water. It made an eruption in their mouths! This week, students used solar cookers to melt s'mores. They were delicious, but some melted on our faces too.

Zoo Snooze

Third, fourth, and fifth grade Bodine students – along with fourth grade teachers Ms. Lee and Mr. Daugherty, second grade teacher Ms. Shaw, and several brave dads – showed up at The Memphis Zoo Friday, February 25, 2011 with sleeping bags, snacks, and tons of energy in hand. The students definitely had an experience of a lifetime! Creatures of all different types visited them in the classroom as the group learned about endangered animals. Then a trek was taken in dead silence and pitch black to places like The Herpetarium and the Nutrition Center. By the middle of the night, everyone was a bit on the animal side! Bright and early the next morning – though little sleep had been had by most – participants had the opportunity to walk around the zoo spotting animals and learning attention-grabbing facts not known by average zoo-goers before the crowds arrived.

3rd Grade Pink Palace Visit

Third graders have been learning about fossils and dinosaurs. To get some hands-on-experience as palentologists, Mrs. Moffitt’s and Ms. Assel’s class went to the Pink Palace for a dinosaur adventure. They got to touch real fossils, including skulls, dinosaur poo and a Triceratop’s leg. Then they toured the museum to experience the size and shape of the ancient creatures.

Random Acts of Kindness

Some Middle School students spent time at the Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center in Collierville yesterday. Elementary students made games for them to take and play with some of the clients. Then the students set up and helped them go bowling! It was a great afternoon enjoyed by all!

Jump for the Heart

On February 14, 2011, The Bodine School students held a Jump-a-Thon to benefit the American Heart Association. School Counselor, DeAnn Mower, and Coach Koji Matsushima organized the event. Students brought in donations for the Heart Association, then spent the afternoon jumping rope with their classmates. At the end of the day, they had raised over $2,000 and jumped over 18,000 times!

This event is the first of several events scheduled during the month of February for the School’s Random Acts of Kindness project. Students are also working on creating handmade games that they will take and play with residents at the Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center.

Fourth graders Zach, Eric, Garnett, and Eileen represented The Bodine School in the 4-H County Speech Competition on January 31st at the Arigicenter. All four students did an outstanding job presenting their one to two minute speeches they wrote themselves on something they truly enjoy. Even under the pressure of a large, unfamiliar audience, a panel of judges, and a large room, all students demonstrated poise, expression, and their best effort! Middle School Dance

On Friday night, January 28, the Middle School held its second annual dance. This years’ theme was “Around the World”, and thanks to the hard work and planning of Ms. Mower, students and parents, the room had an international feel to it. Music was provided by a wonderful DJ. Alumni and guests were also in attendance. The lights dimmed and the dance kicked off at 6:30. There were tables set up throughout representing both individual countries and geographic areas. Students were given the opportunity to sample a variety of foods, and slake their thirst with a variety of American soft drinks. Special thanks to the Yasseri family and others who brought food and helped with the decorations.

5th Grade 4-H Speech Contest

100th Day of School

1st and 2nd grade students celebrated the 100th day of school recently. 1st graders made pennants to celebrate that they are 100 days smarter, made of book with 100 stickers, created a list of 100 words they know, and made a snack using 10 different treats and grouping them in groups of ten. It was a fun day!

These third graders are actually doing comparative anatomy. Since they were studying dinosaurs in class they learned the names of the major dinosaur bones in lab. Then, the students were surprised to learn that they had the exact same bones. Not only did they label a printed human skeleton, they labeled their own skeletons on their own bodies! Each number on their body matches the correct name of the corresponding bone.

Middle School Crane Mobile

Students show the crane mobile hanging in the center area during CLB. The mobile, containing a 24 origami paper cranes suspended from an ultralight plane, was a project put together by students who are reading the nonfiction book Whoop Dreams by Jane Duden. Learning about reintroduction of whooping crane migration to the eastern part of the country, each student is tracking a particular crane as it reaches its winter home in Florida and then returns to Wisconsin's Necedah Wildlife Refuge in the spring. The cranes are scheduled to fly through through Tennessee, making stops in Carol and Hardin Counties toward the end of this month, and anyone can follow their progress on the Operation Migration or Journey North websites.

Fourth and fifth graders attended the Battle of Collierville Reenactment School Day at Piperton Hills Ranch.

Students were guided around the encampment by experienced Civil War soldier historians and stopped at each of ten “stations.” There were presentations by cavalrymen with their horses, union and confederate infantry, cannon-firing by the artillery, medical “surgery” by the Civil War doctor, visits to the displaced ladies and children in a refugee camp, music by an authentic Civil War band and much more.

Principal of the day, Chase B., greeted students during morning drop-off, held an elementary assembly, took attendance with Ms. Crigler, and met with Ms. Cameron on important school matters. He used his authority to allow students to wear shorts an extra day and gave them a popsicle party after lunch. After the fun break was over, it was time for our Principal, along with his Assistant Principals, to tour the school grounds to make sure everything was in order.

Student Supports School

Fourth grade student, Jack L., recently spent some free time working to help his school. Jack collected sticks from his backyard and turned them into pencils.
He drilled holes in the ends of each stick, sharpened the sticks into pencil shapes, then placed and glued lead into the holes he had drilled.
Jack sold his handmade pencils to his neighbors and donated all the money he collected to the school.

Third graders became geologists in the science lab, preparing for their field trip to the Memphis Rocks Gem and Mineral Show. They examined the rocks and collected data on the hardness and magnetism of a variety of samples, including pyrite and sulfur (which really smelled bad).

Ms. Shaw’s class had a great time on the all school field trip to the Gem and Mineral Show. We also made a stop at the Crystal Grotto inside Memorial Park. This field trip taught us so many things that we were amazed at our knowledge.

Middle School's Who's Who Bulletin Board

The theme for the second six weeks in Middle School is Identity and Advocacy. The bulletin board is a grid with each student having a square.

After talking with the students about sports names and product names that are readily identifiable, we spoke about how we identify people. The students brainstormed ways we identify people including how they look and how they sound. We also talked about the uniqueness of our fingerprints, voiceprints, and teeth marks.

In writing, each student answered the three following questions: If you could live anywhere, where would it be? If you could work at any job, what would it be? If you could change one thing to make the world a better place, what would it be?

The answers were transferred to “stick notes”. The notes were mixed up and each student was given a set of answers. They had to place their notes within the squares of the students they thought the answers belonged to.

During the six weeks, the students will have the opportunity to make changes to the board. On the final day of the six weeks, each student will reveal his or her correct answers.

This interactive board allows the students the opportunity to think about their fellow classmates and to see how much they actually know about each other.

Emma competed in the 6th Annual Kids’ Triathlon on September 19th at St. George’s High School. She swam 100 yards (4 lengths), biked 5 kilometers, and ran 1 kilometer. This is Emma’s third triathlon!

Secret Reader at Campus Elementary School

Julian's little brother, Adrian, attends Campus Elementary School. Every week, Adrian's first grade class has a secret reader come to class. It's always someone's mom, and even a dad every now and then, but who's actually coming to read is a big secret.

I arranged a few weeks ago for Julian to be signed up to read during his fall break. So we went to Adrian's class today, and I got the book Adrian's teacher, Mrs. Campbell, had picked out, and Julian and I were taken to our seats to wait for it to start. I sat in the big chair, and Julian sat in the little one next to me. I was still holding the book.

Then Mrs. Campbell asked the class who they thought was going to read to them, and they all answered, "Adrian's mom!" Then she surprised them with "No, it's Adrian's BROTHER."

They were all stunned. I thought Adrian was going to burst.

Julian did BEAUTIFULLY. Not a hint of stage fright, very confident, and clearly perfectly comfortable. He spoke clearly and with the correct volume, and with wonderful, interesting inflection. The kids loved it.

After he'd finished, several of them held their hands up for questions (which were usually statements like, "I have that book!" or something similar), and again, he was perfectly comfortable indicating whose turn it was next to speak. He called on them one by one, and responded well to each comment or question.

I didn't notice until I saw the picture I'd taken -- I should have put him in a Bodine shirt! I'm smacking myself in the head for that. We'll get another opportunity in the spring though. The two schools' spring breaks fall on different dates again, so we'll send him in as a secret reader again on Bodine's break.

I'm very proud of him, and, as always, of Bodine. This is a totally different little man than the one who walked in the door at Bodine in 2008.

A Lesson in Tradition

On September 9, 2010, The Bodine School students were given a lesson in tradition. Staff Sergeant Daniel Freeman with the United States Army came on campus to teach the students the proper way to raise and lower the American flag.

SSG Freeman has been a member of the U.S. Army for seven years, serving in Iraq two times, and doing flag detail in Germany and Oklahoma. “I am so proud to be here today to teach these students the tradition and importance of properly handling, raising, and lowering the American flag”, said Freeman.

A Message from the Dogs...

We dogs at Horse Creek have been eating well and playing with extra toys. All of this is thanks to the generosity of one of the Bodine pack, fourth grader Annie Laurie M. On an adoption day trip to Petco, we met Annie Laurie, who decided to donate her hard earned allowance to help the needs of all of us four-legged friends at Horse Creek in Savannah, TN. Thanks a lot, Annie Laurie!

First, we participated in a number of team-building activities, culminating in an after-dark game of blob tag (with glow lights thanks to Ms Uphoff!). We also had a chance to go on the high ropes course and do some serious climbing on the climbing wall! Despite much thirst, scratches, scrapes, and spiders, a good time was had by all! More than anything else, the retreat gave Middle School students a chance to get away and get to know each other better. We learned about positivity and about supporting each other, and we look forward to practicing them!

After spending the week, reviewing old and new words from the word wall, students in first grade used shaving cream to write their words on their desk. It was a fun, messy way for them to practice their words one more time.

Art for both elementary and middle school this year is focusing on American artists. So far the elementary have worked as groups to build pioneer homestead models, done their own self portraits and made their own creative interpretations of Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Washington.

Ms. Assel’s third grade class has been reading silly poems. To help set the mood, students wear “goofy glasses” while they read. Last week’s poems were My Dog Chewed Up My Homework and My Backpack Weights a Thousand Pounds. Everyone did an excellent job of reading fluently with great expression!

Entertainment Book Sales

Our Entertainment Book sales have begun! After the first week, we have already had many students turn in the proceeds from the books they sold. Friday we had an assembly to announce the winners of the Target gift cards, and all students who have sold a book received a special surprise.

First Days of School

On August 12, 2010, The Bodine School welcomed new and returning students for the first day of the 2010-2011 school year. Balloons decorated the entrances, and faculty and staff were outside to greet students and parents alike.

The first days were busy getting settled with new supplies, new teachers, and new friends. On Friday, The Bodine School’s mascot, a bulldog named “Woody”, was on hand to visit with everyone.

"Back to the Basics"

Thematic units are a part of each new grading period at The Bodine School. Middle Schoolers are currently working on "Back to the Basics," a theme designed to help them retrieve the skills they have already learned as well as learn and apply new middle school procedures. Ms. Uphoff created this colorful bulletin board on which students have displayed many of the basics they feel are important to success in school.

Bodine School alumnus, Paul Cook, came back for a visit with his former teachers this week. Paul graduated from Bodine in 2006, went on to graduate from Bartlett High School in the spring of 2010, and is about to begin classes at Southwest Community College. Paul will take ENT classes for a year to become a firefighter.

Tuesday, August 10th, current families, staff, alumni, and Board members were on hand to welcome new families at the orientation meeting, “Becoming Bodine”. The night began with refreshments and a tour of the school, followed by an orientation meeting for the parents and a fun activity for the students.

Two Bodine alumni, Reed Draffin and Chris Ruch, volunteered to help greet and speak to our new families about their time here. Reed is currently a junior at Middle Tennessee State University majoring in Technical Engineering with an emphasis on Concrete Management. Chris is a junior at Mississippi State University majoring in Landscaping Architectural Design and Management.

Ronald McDonald House Project

The Bodine School students collected 110lbs.in can tabs this school year for the Ronald McDonald House, a home for families who are in Memphis while their child is receiving treatment for cancer or another catastrophic illness at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Francesca Yasseri, a second grade student at Bodine, says "You look at this tiny can tab and don’t think it can’t do anything, but a lot of tiny things built this house.” The students delivered the can tabs to the Ronald McDonald House and were thanked by the staff for helping support the facility that offers families a bright, safe and free place to stay while their child undergoes treatment at the hospital.

The reason students collect the tabs instead of the whole can is because the tab is made of a purer, higher-grade aluminum and there is more money to be made from the tab itself.

Bodine Supports St. Jude

The Bodine School recently participated in the Math-a-Thon fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital here in Memphis. Raising money for St. Jude helps the hospital to continue their life saving work. No child is ever turned away because of the family's inability to pay for their treatment; this includes lodging, travel and food. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude.

Every spring, Bodine students work math problems in order to get their sponsors to donate money to the world-renowned hospital. Since the school began supporting St. Jude over twenty-four years ago, the students have raised $35,135.81. This year, The Bodine School was able to send $2,132 to help the sick children!

In May, all participants were recognized in a school-wide assembly, with various prizes being awarded to students reaching certain fundraising goals. Ms. Lee, Ms. Smith, and several parents took the top fundraisers out to lunch to celebrate their outstanding efforts. The students enjoyed a fun lunch at one of the oldest restaurants in Memphis, The Arcade.

We are very proud of our students for working so hard all these years to support this wonderful local hospital that changes the lives of children from all over the world!

Mrs. Falvey’s Fifth Grade Class Builds Fort Sumter

Our class spent the second semester bringing the Civil War to life by building a model of Fort Sumter. Led by fifth-grader Ruffin W., the students used books and maps to learn about the history of the Civil War and to design the site. The class also e-mailed back and forth with a park guide at Fort Sumter National Monument to ensure that the model was historically accurate. We learned that the ground was covered in oyster shells and the entrance to the fort is called a “sally port.” It was a great learning experience, and we had fun, too!

On Friday, May 21, The Bodine School celebrated Field Day followed by their Awards Ceremony. It was a fun day of games, slides and water balloons. Thanks to Cathy Erb and her parent volunteers, a wonderful picnic lunch was served. Following the morning of fun was an afternoon of awards. Students received awards for the many achievements that they made during the school year. The Student of The Year went to eighth grader Stephen K. who truly is a great leader. Bulldog Awards were presented to Olivia P., sixth grade and Francessca Y., second grade. Parents were recognized for their volunteer service, and Dawn Dia received Volunteer of the Year. Special recognition was given to Wege Criegler and Cathy Hisky for their years of service to the school.

Artwork Displayed at Paragon Bank

Ms. Wakefield and Paragon Bank have been working together on getting some art pieces from her class up at the Saddle Creek Banking Center. They have an art wall in that branch, and they rotate art from various Germantown-area schools. This is the third year for Paragon to have art from Bodine. Be sure to stop by and take a look!

2010 Acorn Auction

The 2010 Acorn Auction was a huge success! Held at the end of March at the University of Memphis's Holiday Inn, this year's theme was "Dreams of the Future". With 370 in attendance, the auction raised over $67,000 for the school! Guests enjoyed fantastic auction items, great food and beverages, and a super jazz band throughout the night. Thanks to all who helped make this year's Auction a wonderful night for all!

Alumni Family Reunion

A big thanks to Alumni parents Janet Dempsey and Pam O’Connor for hosting The Bodine Alumni Reunion on Saturday, April 17th. Alumni students and their families enjoyed visiting the school and the delicious picnic dinner. It was also a great opportunity to share experiences and stories since leaving the School. Alumni Jon Clemons shared his success as a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and his current employment working as an engineer for a Memphis based Information Technology consulting firm.
