Pennies for Peace

The Student Council of The Bodine School voted to begin a collection of pennies in February 2010. A kick off assembly was presented by Student council introducing the Pennies for Peace campaign. Pennies collected will help build schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Each elementary class read the book Listen to the Wind by Greg Mortenson explaining how this campaign began. The Middle School students were encouraged to bring in 1 penny for each American soldier who has been killed in the war on terrorism during the last 2 years, 687pennies each.

Each class had a gallon jug for their collection of pennies. When they had filled their jug with one quart of pennies, each class member could add a brick to the school house poster provided by Ms. Wakefield, the art teacher . Other coins were collected too.

The school collected over $700 to donate to the cause. Student Council members counted money to estimate how much we had collected. Middle School Student Council members took the pennies to the Paragon Bank to be counted by their coin counting machine. A check was mailed to the Central Asia Institute, Pennies for Peace.

Children in over 400 mountain villages in remote northern Pakistan and Afghanistan are on the waiting list, hoping to learn in a new school. The Bodine School students are helping build a bridge of peace, one penny at a time, offering alternatives to the cycle of terrorism and war. For more information visit penniesforpeace.org .

Celebrating Dr. Seuss

On Tuesday, March 2, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s Birthday at Bodine. After lower school lunch, everyone gathered in the multipurpose room. We recited a Read Across America reader’s oath. Mrs. Cameron and Caleb B. performed a Green Eggs and Ham skit, and everyone cheered Mrs. Cameron on as she sampled real green eggs and ham. Mrs. McDonald read the Dr. Seuss book The Thinks You Can Think. Everyone enjoyed eating the delicious sheet cake decorated with a picture of the Cat in the Hat.

On Friday March 5, the gentle giant golden retrievers from Paws for Reading, Tank and Cooper, were in the Bodine Library. Students all got a chance to come in and sit with the dogs, listen to a story, and visit with the beautiful dogs.

All during the month of March we will continue to honor Dr. Seuss and his dedication to enjoyable children’s literature. In library we will play Seuss games and focus on reading more Seuss stories aloud. Each week there will be a new Seuss trivia question , and two winners each week will win a book. Middle school students will read to 1st and 2nd graders the week of March 22-25.

3rd Grade Dino News

Third graders have been learning all about dinosaurs and fossils. Students made their own fossils in science lab, then had a day to act like dinosaurs in the lab and learn how tough life was for the ancient creatures! Each student chose a dinosaur to research, then gave reports and visual presentations. The junior paleontologists finished the study by going to the Pink Palace with Ms. Aven’s class. Ms. Rosemary, the dinosaur expert, explained the types of dinosaurs and their eggs, then let everyone dig for and study their discoveries. She also let everyone touch a variety of fossils, including a real Triceratops leg and some dino poo! Then we all toured the fossil and bone exhibits to learn what prehistoric creatures roamed the Memphis area.
