On Wednesday the Middle School built a small scale replica of the Via Apia (Apian Way) as a hands-on project for their unit on Rome. Our road consists of drainage ditches, "kerb" stones, a layer of "boulders" and sand, a layer of gravel and "clay," and a layer of cobbles. It measures 10.5 feet in length and is 1.5 feet wide, including the drainage ditches, and it took about 2 hours to construct.
Built by legionaries and slaves, actual Roman roads were about six feet across from kerbstone to kerbstone and stretched all over Europe. Portions of these roads still exist today and many served as the basis for modern road systems in Europe, hence the expression, "all roads lead to Rome..."
"Way" to go Middle School!
